---+!! Using the Messaging System The messaging system allows to immediately send notifications about an event to the users of the Online group. %TOC% ---++ Do I need to configure anything for receiving the messages? No. The messaging system is _already configured_ for the Windows PCs and for the Linux servers in the LHCb network. If you have an account in the Online network, you don't need anything else for receiving the notifications. If you're logged into one of the machines, _you will receive automatically all the messages_. In Windows a small pop up Window will appear, in Linux you will the text in your terminal. You do not need to make any special configuration on your profile. ---++ I want to do more! How can I use send messages? The Messaging System works like a normal instant messaging service, like MSN Messenger, GTalk, ICQ, etc, and you can use your own client for sending and receiving messages. You can use any client that supports the XMPP/Jabber protocol. This is the same protocol used by GTalk, so if you have configured your client for this service you already know how to do it for the Messaging System. There are several clients available for the different platforms, such as Pidgin, Adium, Trillian, Psi, Kopete, just to name a few. You can use the following information to configure it: $ Protocol: XMPP or Jabber $ Username: ( _your Online network username_) $ Domain: lbim.cern.ch $ Jabber ID ( ***): ( _your Online network username_)@im.lbdaq.cern.ch $ Password: ( _your Online network password_) ( ***) Required by some clients. Note that you can access the messaging system from the CERN Network and from the Internet as well. ---+++ Sending messages The Messaging System allows you to send messages to other users, but also to the members of a group and also to all the users of the Online Network. For sending messages *you have to configure your own client*. If you have not do it yet, please follow the instructions above. ---+++ How can I send a message to a group? You have to add a special contact that for sending a message to all the members of a group. The name of the contact is *(group)@notification.lbim.cern.ch*. For example, if you want to send a message to the members of the group *onliners*, you have to add the contact *onliners@notification.lbim.cern.ch* and send him a message. The following is a list of some of the groups: $ Administrators: admin@notification.lbim.cern.ch $ Calorimeter: calo@notification.lbim.cern.ch $ Gas: gcs@notification.lbim.cern.ch $ Gas Experts: gcs-experts@notification.lbim.cern.ch $ Gas LHCb: gcs-lhcb@notification.lbim.cern.ch $ HLT: hlt@notification.lbim.cern.ch $ hstwriter: hstwriter@notification.lbim.cern.ch $ Muon: muon@notification.lbim.cern.ch $ Online: onliners@notification.lbim.cern.ch $ Outer tracker: ot@notification.lbim.cern.ch $ RICH: rich@notification.lbim.cern.ch $ Silicon Tracker group: st@notification.lbim.cern.ch $ L0 Trigger group: trg@notification.lbim.cern.ch $ VErtex LOcator group: velo@notification.lbim.cern.ch ---+++ How can I send a message to everybody? There is another special contact that can be used for sending messages to all the users. Just add the following contact, send him a message and all the users will receive it.
all@notification.lbim.cern.ch
---+++ I don't have a client installed. Which one do you recommend? There are several clients that can be used with the Messaging System and they are available for Linux, Mac and Windows. The following is a list of some of them: ---++++ Linux * Pidgin: A popular client inclued in many distributions, such as SLC, Ubuntu and Redhat. * Kopete: Another popular client used mainly with KDE based distributions ---++++ Mac * Adium * iChat: the client included in MacOs. ---++++ Windows * Pidgin: can be installed in other operating systems too. You can download it for Windows. * Psi: Another client that can be used with Windows. -- Main.JuanManuelCaicedoCarvajal - 02 Jun 2009
