Using the Messaging System

The messaging system allows to immediately send notifications about an event to the users of the Online group.

Do I need to configure anything for receiving the messages?

No. The messaging system is already configured for the Windows PCs and for the Linux servers in the LHCb network. If you hava an account in the Online network, you don't need anything else for receiving the notifications.

If you're logged into one of the machines, you will receive automatically all the messages. In Windows a small pop up Window will appear, in Linux you will the text in your terminal. You do not need to make any special configuration on your profile.

I want to do more! How can I use send messages?

The Messaging System works like a normal instant messaging service, like MSN Messenger, GTalk, ICQ, etc, and you can use your own client for sending and receiving messages.

You can use any client that supports the XMPP/Jabber protocol (like Pidgin, Adium, Trillian, Psi, Kopete, etc). Just use the following information for configuring your client:

Protocol
XMPP or Jabber
Username
(your Online network username)
Domain
lbim.cern.ch
Jabber ID (*)
(your Online network username)@im.lbdaq.cern.ch
Password
(your Online network password)

(*) Required by some clients.

Note that you can access the messaging system from the CERN Network and from the Internet as well.
