How to get an LHCb Online account

What you need to know

  • You have one account and one password for both Windows and Linux machines.
  • Your default password will be communicated by mail. To reset password see: Instruction for reset password:

  • The gateway machines are lbgw for Linux and lbts for Windows.
  • The gateway machines are only accessible from within the CERN network (.cern.ch). You can for example connect from lxplus or cernts.
  • You have to use an ssh client (like open-ssh or putty) to connect to the Linux gateways
  • You have to use a Remote Desktop client: in Windows from Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> Remote Desktop Connection; in Linux use rdesktop or tsclient; on Mac OS-X you can get the Remote Desktop Connection from Microsoft (for free)
  • Needless to say that these machines should only be used for Online related work, not for browsing the web, reading mail.
  • You can connect to any machine in the Online network from the gateways. Use ssh (recommended) or telnet as needed.
  • The machines on the Online network are called .lbdaq.cern.ch. This domain suffix need not be specified.
  • Machines visible on the CERN network as well (such as the gateways) have two names:
Machine Name LHCb Online Network CERN Network
gw gw.lbdaq.cern.ch lbgw.cern.ch
ts ts.lbdaq.cern.ch lbts.cern.ch

  • Your TWiki account will be enabled in one hour after creation of account.
  • For shift db access (lbshiftdb.cern.ch), you can use your normal CERN account.
  • For logbook write access (lblogbook.cern.ch), you should ask an account on the logbook login page (and wait 1/2 to 1 day for account activation).
